tumor-associated retinal detachment

Also written as: TARD — Tumor-Associated Retinal Detachment

Secondary retinal separation caused by fluid accumulation or mechanical displacement from underlying intraocular tumors.

Full Definition

A type of retinal detachment that occurs secondary to intraocular tumors, most commonly choroidal melanomas or metastases. The detachment may result from tumor-induced vascular permeability, mechanical elevation by the growing mass, or inflammatory changes. Unlike rhegmatogenous detachment, there is typically no retinal break, and the subretinal fluid often contains tumor cells or inflammatory debris. The extent and characteristics of the detachment can provide diagnostic information about tumor behavior.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the underlying tumor type when documenting this finding.
