Calcium deposits within ocular tumors that appear as hyperechoic foci on ultrasound and aid in differential diagnosis.

Full Definition

Tumor calcification refers to the deposition of calcium salts within intraocular malignancies, most characteristically seen in retinoblastoma where it occurs in over 90% of cases. On B-scan ultrasonography, calcification appears as highly reflective echogenic foci with acoustic shadowing, providing a key diagnostic feature that helps differentiate retinoblastoma from other pediatric intraocular masses. Calcification may also occur in choroidal osteomas, old choroidal hemangiomas, and occasionally in chronic choroidal melanomas. The pattern and extent of calcification can provide prognostic information and influence treatment planning. CT imaging is highly sensitive for detecting even small amounts of calcium within ocular tumors.
