Capsulorrhexis is a critical step in modern cataract surgery where a circular, continuous tear is made in the anterior lens capsule to access the lens nucleus for removal. This technique, also called continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), provides a smooth, strong edge that is less likely to tear during surgery compared to traditional can-opener capsulotomy. The size and centering of the capsulorrhexis affects IOL positioning and long-term stability. A well-executed capsulorrhexis typically measures 5-6mm in diameter and overlaps the IOL optic edge by approximately 0.5mm to prevent lens dislocation.
