ectropion

Pronunciation: ek-TROH-pee-on

Outward turning of the eyelid margin, exposing the conjunctival surface and potentially affecting tear drainage.

Full Definition

Ectropion is a condition where the eyelid, most commonly the lower lid, turns outward away from the eye surface. This malposition can result from aging, scarring, facial nerve paralysis, or congenital factors. The exposed conjunctival surface becomes irritated and may develop chronic inflammation, while tear drainage is compromised due to malposition of the punctum. Surgical correction often involves tightening procedures, wedge resections, or reconstructive techniques depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'entropion' which involves inward turning of the eyelid.

In Context

  • "The patient presented with symptomatic lower lid ectropion causing chronic tearing and irritation." — Clinical examination note
  • "Lateral canthal tightening was performed to correct the age-related ectropion." — Surgical procedure summary
