Zonulolysis

Dissolution or weakening of zonular fibers supporting the crystalline lens, often enzyme-induced during surgery.

Full Definition

Zonulolysis refers to the intentional or pathological dissolution of zonular fibers that suspend the crystalline lens within the eye. In surgical contexts, alpha-chymotrypsin or other enzymes may be used to induce controlled zonulolysis to facilitate lens extraction, particularly in intracapsular cataract surgery. Pathological zonulolysis can occur in conditions like Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria, or trauma, leading to lens subluxation or dislocation. The term is also used to describe the weakening of zonular attachments that can complicate modern cataract surgery.
