enhancement pattern

The characteristic appearance of contrast uptake and distribution within tissues on contrast-enhanced imaging studies.

Full Definition

Enhancement pattern describes the spatial and temporal characteristics of contrast material uptake and distribution within tissues during contrast-enhanced imaging studies. Common patterns include homogeneous (uniform), heterogeneous (non-uniform), peripheral (rim-like), central, septal, or no enhancement. In oncologic imaging, enhancement patterns provide important diagnostic information about tissue vascularity, perfusion, and potential malignancy. Specific patterns may suggest particular diagnoses, with rim enhancement often indicating necrosis or infection, and homogeneous enhancement suggesting hypervascular tumors. Assessment requires comparison of pre- and post-contrast images.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from enhancement kinetics (temporal changes) and enhancement curves (quantitative measurements)

In Context

  • "Rim enhancement pattern suggested abscess formation rather than malignancy." — Differential diagnosis discussion
