surgical staging

Intraoperative assessment and documentation of cancer extent to determine accurate tumor stage.

Full Definition

Surgical staging involves the direct visualization and assessment of tumor extent during operative procedures to accurately determine cancer stage. This process includes examination of the primary tumor, regional lymph nodes, and potential sites of metastasis that can only be evaluated surgically. Surgical staging provides more accurate information than imaging-based clinical staging and often reveals occult disease. The findings directly influence treatment decisions, prognosis, and postoperative therapy planning. It may involve tissue sampling, lymph node dissection, or inspection of peritoneal surfaces.

Usage

Usage note: Document all anatomical sites examined during staging procedures.
