Foreign body reaction to retained surgical material, typically gauze or sponges left in the operative field.
Full Definition
A granulomatous inflammatory mass that forms around surgical textiles inadvertently left in the body during operation. Textilomas, also called gossypibomas, can occur months to years after surgery and may mimic tumor recurrence on imaging studies. They present significant medicolegal concerns and emphasize the importance of meticulous surgical count procedures. These foreign body reactions can cause pain, infection, or obstruction depending on their location.
Usage
Usage note: Both 'textiloma' and 'gossypiboma' are acceptable; latter derives from 'gossypium' (cotton).
