tumor spillage

Inadvertent release of tumor cells during surgical manipulation, potentially leading to local recurrence or metastasis.

Full Definition

Tumor spillage occurs when cancer cells are inadvertently released into the surgical field during tumor manipulation or resection. This can happen through rupture of the tumor capsule, cutting through tumor tissue, or inadequate surgical technique. Spillage is particularly concerning in certain cancer types such as ovarian cancer, where it can upstage the disease, or in sarcomas, where it significantly increases local recurrence risk. Prevention strategies include gentle tissue handling, appropriate retraction techniques, and en bloc resection methods.

Usage

Usage note: Document any spillage incidents as they may affect staging and prognosis.

In Context

  • "Care was taken to avoid tumor spillage during mobilization of the ovarian mass." — operative note
  • "The case was complicated by tumor spillage, requiring copious irrigation of the peritoneal cavity." — surgical complication report
