fornix

Pronunciation: FOR-niks

Deep recess between the eyelid and eyeball where conjunctiva reflects from lid to globe.

Full Definition

The fornix refers to the deep conjunctival recesses where the palpebral conjunctiva (lining the eyelids) reflects to become the bulbar conjunctiva (covering the eyeball). There are four fornices: superior, inferior, medial, and lateral, with the superior and inferior being most surgically relevant. These spaces can harbor foreign bodies, serve as reservoir sites for topical medications, and are important surgical landmarks for conjunctival procedures. Fornix reconstruction may be necessary following trauma, cicatricial disease, or extensive surgical procedures to maintain normal eyelid function and tear distribution.

Usage

Usage note: Anatomical term critical for understanding eyelid and conjunctival surgery.
