Full Definition

Fornix reconstruction refers to surgical procedures designed to recreate or deepen the conjunctival fornices - the recesses where the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva meet. This procedure is often necessary following trauma, chemical burns, cicatricial diseases, or extensive conjunctival scarring that has obliterated the normal fornix architecture. Techniques include mucous membrane grafting, conjunctival advancement, or amniotic membrane transplantation. Successful reconstruction is crucial for proper eyelid function, tear distribution, and comfortable prosthetic wear in cases where the natural eye has been lost.
