glossectomy

Pronunciation: glos-EK-toh-mee

Surgical removal of part or all of the tongue, typically performed for malignant tumors or severe trauma.

Full Definition

A major oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure involving partial or total removal of the tongue. Partial glossectomy preserves some tongue function, while hemiglossectomy removes one side, and total glossectomy removes the entire organ. The procedure is most commonly indicated for squamous cell carcinoma but may also be performed for severe trauma or benign lesions. Reconstruction often requires local flaps, regional flaps, or free tissue transfer to optimize speech and swallowing function. Post-operative care focuses on airway management, nutrition, and rehabilitation.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the extent of resection (partial, hemi, or total) in all surgical documentation.
