Full Definition

A regenerative procedure that employs the principle of guided tissue regeneration to promote bone formation in areas of bone deficiency. The technique uses barrier membranes (resorbable or non-resorbable) to exclude soft tissue ingrowth while allowing osteogenic cells to populate the defect. Often combined with bone grafting materials, this procedure is commonly used for ridge augmentation prior to implant placement.
