nasoethmoid fracture

Pronunciation: NAY-zo-ETH-moyd

Complex facial fracture involving the central portion of the face including nasal bones and ethmoid sinuses.

Full Definition

Nasoethmoid fractures represent complex injuries to the central facial skeleton involving the nasal bones, ethmoid air cells, and surrounding structures including the lacrimal system and medial orbital walls. These fractures often result from high-energy trauma and are classified based on the involvement of the medial canthal tendon attachment. Type I fractures have an intact medial canthal tendon, Type II have a comminuted but attached tendon fragment, and Type III have complete detachment. Treatment requires careful attention to nasal projection, intercanthal distance, and lacrimal drainage function. These injuries frequently require immediate attention due to potential CSF leaks and associated intracranial complications.

Usage

Usage note: May be abbreviated as NOE fracture in clinical documentation.
