Neurosensory deficit refers to altered sensation including numbness, tingling, or complete loss of feeling in areas innervated by facial nerves. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, this most commonly affects the distribution of the inferior alveolar nerve (chin and lower lip) or lingual nerve (tongue and floor of mouth). The deficit may be temporary or permanent depending on the nature and extent of nerve injury. Causes include surgical trauma during procedures like wisdom tooth extraction, implant placement, or orthognathic surgery. Assessment involves detailed sensory testing, and management may include observation, medication, or microsurgical nerve repair in severe cases.
