autogenous graft
Graft material harvested from the same individual who will receive the transplant.
Full Definition
An autogenous graft, also called an autograft, is tissue or bone harvested from one site in a patient and transplanted to another site in the same patient. This represents the gold standard for bone grafting due to its osteogenic, osteoinductive, and osteoconductive properties without risk of immunological rejection. Common donor sites include the chin, mandibular ramus, and iliac crest. While autogenous grafts provide the best biological outcomes, they require a second surgical site and may have limited availability.
