An envelope flap is a surgical approach where a horizontal incision is made along the gingival margin or mucosa without vertical relieving incisions at the mesial and distal ends. This technique preserves interdental papillae and provides adequate access for procedures like simple extractions or minor bone removal. The envelope design maintains better blood supply compared to full-thickness flaps with relieving incisions but may provide more limited surgical access for complex procedures.
