fenestration

A localized defect in the facial or lingual bone plate that exposes the root surface.

Full Definition

Fenestration is a bony defect where the facial or lingual cortical bone is absent, creating a window-like opening that exposes the tooth root surface. This condition can occur naturally due to thin bone anatomy, tooth malposition, or trauma. It may also be created surgically to access impacted teeth or remove pathology. Fenestrations can compromise periodontal health and complicate procedures like extractions or implant placement, often requiring bone grafting for repair.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'dehiscence' which refers to marginal bone loss exposing the root.
