Fibrous Dysplasia
A benign bone disorder where normal bone is replaced with fibrous tissue, creating characteristic ground-glass radiographic appearance.
Full Definition
Fibrous dysplasia is a non-neoplastic skeletal disorder characterized by the replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue and irregularly formed bone. In the maxillofacial region, it typically presents as painless swelling with a characteristic ground-glass radiographic appearance. The condition can be monostotic (affecting one bone) or polyostotic (multiple bones), and may be associated with endocrine abnormalities in McCune-Albright syndrome.
Usage
Usage note: Always use ground-glass (hyphenated) when describing the radiographic appearance.
