The lingual nerve is a sensory branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3) that provides sensation to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, floor of the mouth, and lingual gingiva. During oral surgery procedures, particularly third molar extractions and implant placement, the nerve is at risk of injury, which can result in numbness, altered sensation, or dysesthesia of the tongue. Proper anatomical knowledge and surgical technique are essential to minimize this complication.
