The mucogingival junction represents the anatomical boundary between the firm, keratinized attached gingiva and the loose, non-keratinized alveolar mucosa that covers the vestibular fornix. This junction is clinically identifiable by differences in color, texture, and tissue mobility. In oral surgery, the mucogingival junction serves as a critical landmark for flap design, as incisions placed in keratinized tissue heal more predictably than those in movable mucosa. The junction's position varies among individuals and may be altered by periodontal disease, orthodontic movement, or surgical procedures. Adequate attached gingiva (typically 2mm minimum) is considered important for long-term periodontal health around natural teeth and implants.
