Full Definition
A mucoperiosteal flap is a full-thickness soft tissue flap that contains all tissue layers from the surface mucosa down to and including the periosteum covering the bone. This flap design provides excellent access for surgical procedures while maintaining the periosteal blood supply to the underlying bone. The intact periosteum helps preserve bone vitality and promotes healing. This technique is commonly used for extractions, implant placement, and periodontal surgery where bone access is required.
