Osteoradionecrosis

Also written as: ORN — osteoradionecrosis

Bone necrosis resulting from radiation therapy, characterized by exposed necrotic bone that fails to heal.

Full Definition

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe late complication of head and neck radiation therapy, characterized by bone necrosis, poor healing, and potential for pathological fracture. The condition results from radiation-induced damage to blood vessels, reduced cellular activity, and compromised tissue healing capacity. ORN typically presents as exposed necrotic bone that persists for more than three months without healing, often requiring surgical debridement and reconstruction.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in patient histories.

In Context
