Full Definition

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis (BRON) is a serious complication of bisphosphonate therapy that can complicate treatment in orthopedic oncology patients. While most commonly affecting the jaw (BRONJ), this condition can occur in other skeletal sites, particularly in patients receiving high-dose intravenous bisphosphonates for bone metastases or primary bone tumors. The condition is characterized by exposed, necrotic bone that fails to heal despite appropriate treatment. In orthopedic oncology, BRON poses particular challenges as these patients often require extensive surgical procedures and may have compromised healing. Risk factors include duration of bisphosphonate use, route of administration, dental procedures, and concurrent chemotherapy or corticosteroid use.
