The mineralized intercellular substance of bone tissue that provides structural framework and appears characteristic on imaging studies.

Full Definition

Osseous matrix refers to the calcified extracellular matrix of bone composed primarily of collagen fibers and calcium phosphate crystals (hydroxyapatite). In orthopedic oncology, the pattern and density of osseous matrix production by tumors is a critical diagnostic feature visible on plain radiographs and CT scans. Different tumor types produce characteristic matrix patterns: osteoid matrix appears cloud-like and amorphous, while chondroid matrix shows punctate or ring-and-arc calcifications. The presence, absence, or pattern of matrix mineralization helps differentiate between various bone tumors and influences treatment planning.

Usage note: Should not be confused with 'osteoid matrix' which refers specifically to unmineralized bone matrix.
