AROM

Also written as: AROM — Active Range of Motion

Movement of a joint through its range of motion by the patient's own muscular effort.

Full Definition

Active Range of Motion is the movement of a joint through its available range of motion using the patient's own muscular contractions without external assistance. AROM exercises are prescribed when patients have sufficient strength and are medically cleared to actively move their joints. This type of movement promotes muscle strength, coordination, and functional recovery while allowing therapists to assess the patient's motor control and pain response.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize when used as an acronym; lowercase when spelled out in full.
