Avascular Necrosis

Pronunciation: ay-VAS-kyuh-lar neh-KROH-sis

Also written as: AVN — Avascular Necrosis

Death of bone tissue due to loss of blood supply, commonly affecting the femoral head and other weight-bearing joints.

Full Definition

Avascular necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, occurs when bone tissue dies due to inadequate blood supply. This condition frequently affects the femoral head but can occur in other bones including the humeral head, scaphoid, and talus. AVN often results from trauma, steroid use, or other factors that compromise vascular supply. In rehabilitation, AVN significantly impacts weight-bearing restrictions and exercise progressions, as excessive loading can accelerate joint collapse.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as AVN; osteonecrosis is the preferred contemporary term though both are acceptable.

In Context

  • "Avascular necrosis of the femoral head necessitated strict non-weight-bearing status during early rehabilitation phases." — weight-bearing precautions
  • "The patient's avascular necrosis diagnosis required careful monitoring of pain levels during progressive loading activities." — physical therapy progression note
