Co-contraction refers to the simultaneous activation of agonist and antagonist muscle groups around a joint, creating increased joint stability but reduced movement efficiency. This protective mechanism is often observed following injury or surgery as the nervous system attempts to provide additional joint stability. While co-contraction can be beneficial for joint protection during early healing phases, persistent co-contraction patterns can lead to decreased functional performance and increased energy expenditure during movement.
