Weight-Bearing as Tolerated

Also written as: WBAT — Weight-Bearing as Tolerated

Post-surgical restriction allowing patients to bear weight on affected limb based on comfort level.

Full Definition

Weight-Bearing as Tolerated (WBAT) is a common post-operative weight-bearing restriction in orthopedic rehabilitation that permits patients to place as much weight on the affected extremity as they can comfortably tolerate. This progressive approach allows for natural healing while encouraging early mobilization. WBAT is typically prescribed following less complex procedures or when bone healing is progressing well. Physical therapists use this guideline to advance gait training and functional activities safely.

Usage

Usage note: Use abbreviation in clinical notes; spell out in patient education materials.
