Early stage of bone stress injury that precedes stress fracture, detectable on MRI but not X-ray.

Full Definition

A stress reaction represents the initial response of bone to repetitive mechanical loading that exceeds the bone's capacity to repair itself. This condition exists on a continuum of bone stress injuries, occurring before the development of a true stress fracture. Stress reactions are characterized by bone marrow edema visible on MRI but without the cortical break seen in stress fractures. Common locations include the tibia, metatarsals, and femoral neck in runners. Early recognition and treatment with activity modification can prevent progression to complete stress fracture.
