Full Definition

Subchondral bone refers to the highly mineralized, compact bone tissue that lies immediately beneath the articular cartilage in synovial joints. This bone layer serves as a shock absorber and provides structural support for the overlying cartilage during weight-bearing and joint motion. In sports medicine, subchondral bone changes are often visible on imaging studies and may indicate early degenerative joint disease, osteochondral injuries, or stress-related bone changes in athletes. Subchondral sclerosis (increased bone density) or subchondral cysts may develop in response to altered joint mechanics or repetitive loading.
