Cement Mantle

Full Definition
The cement mantle is the layer of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement that surrounds and secures a prosthetic implant to the host bone in cemented arthroplasty procedures. An optimal cement mantle should be 2-4mm thick, uniform, and free of voids or inclusions to ensure proper load transfer and implant longevity. Inadequate cement mantles with thin spots, cracks, or incomplete coverage can lead to stress concentrations, implant loosening, and eventual failure requiring revision surgery.
