The metaphysis is the wider portion of a long bone located between the epiphysis (end of the bone) and the diaphysis (shaft). In growing children, this region contains the metaphyseal bone adjacent to the growth plate (physis). The metaphysis is composed of cancellous bone and is a common site for certain types of fractures and bone tumors.
