Modular implants are prosthetic devices designed with separate, interchangeable components that allow surgeons to customize the implant configuration during surgery to match individual patient anatomy and pathology. Common examples include modular hip stems with exchangeable heads and necks, modular tumor prostheses, and revision knee systems. While modularity offers surgical flexibility and inventory advantages, it also introduces potential failure modes including fretting, corrosion, and mechanical dissociation at modular junctions.
