Spondylolisthesis
Pronunciation: spon-dih-low-LIS-thee-sis
A spinal condition where one vertebra slips forward over the vertebra below it.
Full Definition
Spondylolisthesis is a spinal disorder characterized by the anterior displacement of one vertebra relative to the vertebra immediately below it. The condition is classified into five types based on etiology: dysplastic, isthmic, degenerative, traumatic, and pathologic. The degree of slip is graded from I to V using the Meyerding classification system, with Grade I representing less than 25% displacement and Grade V indicating complete displacement (spondyloptosis). Common locations include L5 on S1 and L4 on L5. Symptoms may include lower back pain, radicular pain, and neurological deficits. Treatment varies from conservative management to surgical fusion depending on severity and symptoms.
Usage
Usage note: Often confused with spondylolysis (pars defect without slip). Note complex pronunciation and spelling.
