Stress Fracture

A small crack in bone caused by repetitive force or overuse, typically occurring in weight-bearing bones.

A stress fracture is a small crack in bone that develops gradually due to repetitive force, overuse, or normal forces applied to abnormal bone. These fractures commonly occur in weight-bearing bones of the lower extremities, particularly the metatarsals, tibia, and femur, though they can affect any bone subjected to repetitive stress. Stress fractures are often seen in athletes, military personnel, and individuals who suddenly increase their activity level. Unlike acute fractures, stress fractures develop insidiously and may initially show normal radiographs, requiring advanced imaging such as MRI or bone scan for diagnosis. Treatment typically involves activity modification, rest, and gradual return to activity once healing occurs.
