consolidation

The final stage of bone healing where the fracture site achieves complete structural integrity.

Full Definition

Consolidation represents the completion of fracture healing, characterized by the formation of mature lamellar bone that fully bridges the fracture site. During this phase, the temporary woven bone formed during callus formation is remodeled into organized, mechanically competent bone tissue. Radiographically, consolidation is evidenced by disappearance of the fracture line and restoration of normal bone architecture. This process can take months to years depending on patient factors and fracture characteristics.

Usage

Usage note: Represents the end-stage of healing; distinguish from early callus formation or delayed union.

In Context

  • "Radiographic consolidation was complete at the 12-week follow-up appointment." — Progress note
  • "Delayed consolidation prompted consideration of bone grafting procedures." — Treatment planning
