heterotopic ossification

Pronunciation: HET-er-oh-TOP-ik os-if-ih-KAY-shun

Abnormal bone formation in soft tissues following trauma or surgery, particularly around joints.

Full Definition

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process where bone and cartilage develop in soft tissues that normally do not ossify. In orthopedic trauma, HO commonly occurs following high-energy injuries, burns, or surgical procedures, particularly around the hip and elbow. This complication can significantly limit joint range of motion and may require prophylactic treatment with radiation or NSAIDs in high-risk patients.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as 'HO' in clinical notes; distinguish from 'myositis ossificans' which is a specific subtype.

In Context

  • "Prophylactic radiation was administered to prevent heterotopic ossification following acetabular fracture repair." — Treatment protocol
  • "Six months post-injury, the patient developed significant heterotopic ossification limiting hip flexion." — Follow-up examination
