Interfragmentary compression is a fundamental principle in fracture fixation where compressive forces are applied across fracture lines to achieve intimate contact between bone fragments. This technique promotes primary bone healing by eliminating motion at the fracture site and facilitating direct osteonal remodeling. Compression can be achieved through lag screws, compression plates, or tension band constructs. Proper interfragmentary compression reduces the risk of nonunion and hardware loosening while accelerating the healing process.
