The load-bearing axis represents the primary pathway through which compressive and tensile forces travel through a bone during functional activities. In orthopedic trauma surgery, restoration of the proper load-bearing axis is essential for optimal healing and prevention of complications. Malalignment of this axis can lead to stress concentration, hardware failure, and poor functional outcomes.

Usage note: Not to be confused with 'anatomical axis' which refers to the geometric center line of a bone.
