An implant that bears part of the mechanical load alongside the bone during healing.

A load-sharing device is an orthopedic implant designed to work in conjunction with bone to distribute mechanical forces during the healing process. Unlike load-bearing devices that carry the entire load, load-sharing implants allow controlled loading of the healing bone while providing backup support. This concept is crucial in modern fracture fixation as it promotes bone healing through controlled stress while preventing catastrophic failure. Common examples include bridge plates and flexible nails that maintain alignment while permitting some controlled motion at the fracture site.
