Full Definition

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a two-stage surgical procedure where the surgeon first exposes the fracture site through an incision (open reduction) to visualize and properly align the bone fragments. Internal fixation then involves placing metal hardware such as plates, screws, or rods to maintain the reduction and promote healing. This procedure is typically used for complex fractures that cannot be adequately treated with closed reduction or external immobilization. ORIF allows for precise anatomical reduction and early mobilization of the patient.
