Biomechanical Assessment
A structured clinical evaluation of the mechanical forces and movement patterns of a patient's musculoskeletal system, used to inform orthotic prescription.
Full Definition
A biomechanical assessment is a systematic clinical examination carried out by an orthotist or allied health professional to evaluate posture, gait, joint range of motion, muscle strength, and foot structure. The findings guide orthotic prescription by identifying the underlying mechanical causes of a patient's symptoms or functional deficits. Documentation of the assessment must include standardized measurements and observational gait analysis findings. Editors should ensure that assessment findings are clearly distinguished from the resulting orthotic prescription in clinical documents. The term should not be shortened to 'bio assessment' in formal clinical writing.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from 'gait analysis', which is a component of a biomechanical assessment, not a synonym for it.
