Biomechanical Efficiency

The degree to which an orthotic device optimises a patient's movement patterns while minimising energy expenditure during ambulation.

Biomechanical efficiency refers to the extent to which an orthosis facilitates normal or near-normal movement with the least possible metabolic cost. It is distinct from mechanical efficiency, which refers to the engineering properties of a device in isolation. Writers should not conflate this term with general fitness or exercise efficiency.
