Ethylene vinyl acetate; a closed-cell foam polymer widely used as a cushioning and posting material in orthotic fabrication.

Full Definition

EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a lightweight, compressible copolymer foam available in a range of densities, from soft cushioning grades to firm posting grades. It is the most commonly used material for orthotic covers, posts, and accommodative foot orthoses because it is easy to shape with heat, bondable with standard adhesives, and cost-effective. Editors will encounter EVA in material specifications, laboratory work orders, and product datasheets, where it is almost always written as the acronym rather than the full form. Density is typically specified in kg/m³ or by a manufacturer colour code; editors should ensure the density reference is present whenever EVA is mentioned in a fabrication protocol. Not to be confused with EVAC (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, a variant term) or with the medical abbreviation EVA used in ophthalmology.
