Exoskeletal Construction

A method of lower-limb orthosis fabrication in which the structural support is provided by a rigid outer shell, as opposed to an endoskeletal (modular) system with an internal frame.

Full Definition

In exoskeletal (also termed 'conventional' or 'shell') construction, the structural integrity of the orthosis is provided by its outer casing — historically leather or metal, now typically thermoplastic or composite. This contrasts with endoskeletal construction, in which an internal skeletal frame provides structure and the outer surface is a cosmetic cover. Exoskeletal designs are often more durable and easier to repair, but may be heavier and less cosmetically acceptable. Editors working on prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) technical documents must correctly distinguish these two construction philosophies, as they have significant implications for device specification, cost, and patient use.

Usage note: The term 'crustacean construction' is an older colloquialism and should be avoided in formal clinical or procurement documentation in favour of 'exoskeletal construction'.
