Full Definition

Patellar tendon-bearing (PTB) refers to a socket or orthotic design feature that uses a shelf or brim positioned to bear body weight through the patellar tendon and tibial flares, thereby reducing or eliminating load at the foot and ankle. Originally developed in prosthetics, the concept was adapted into orthotics for managing conditions requiring distal offloading, such as Charcot neuroarthropathy and complex ankle fractures. In editorial review, the term is hyphenated as a compound modifier ('patellar tendon-bearing brace') but written without a hyphen when 'bearing' is used predicatively.
