Pedobarography

Pronunciation: peh-doh-bah-ROG-rah-fee

The measurement and mapping of pressure distribution across the plantar surface of the foot during standing or walking, used to guide orthotic design.

Full Definition

Pedobarography uses pressure-sensitive platforms or insoles to capture the distribution, magnitude, and timing of forces beneath the foot. The resulting pressure maps are used by orthotists to identify areas of high plantar pressure—particularly relevant in diabetic foot management—and to evaluate the effectiveness of orthotic interventions. Reports typically include peak pressure values, contact area measurements, and pressure–time integrals. Editors reviewing pedobarography reports must ensure correct use of units (kilopascals, kPa) and appropriate interpretation of heat-map imagery in document layouts.

Usage note: Specify whether static or dynamic pedobarography was performed. Pressure values should be reported in kPa.
