Propofol-Related Infusion Syndrome - a rare but potentially fatal complication associated with prolonged, high-dose propofol infusion in pediatric patients.

Full Definition

Propofol-Related Infusion Syndrome (PRIS) is a serious adverse reaction characterized by metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, hyperkalemia, hepatomegaly, renal failure, and cardiovascular collapse. First described in critically ill children receiving prolonged propofol infusions, PRIS typically occurs with doses exceeding 4 mg/kg/hr for more than 48 hours. The syndrome is thought to result from impaired fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Due to this risk, many institutions have established protocols limiting propofol use in pediatric ICU settings, particularly for long-term sedation.
