A constellation of cardiovascular and respiratory changes that occur when pediatric patients are placed in prone position during anesthesia.

Full Definition

Prone positioning syndrome refers to the physiological changes and potential complications that arise when children are positioned face-down during surgical procedures. In pediatric patients, prone positioning can cause decreased venous return, increased airway pressures, compression of abdominal vessels affecting cardiac output, and difficulty with ventilation due to chest wall restriction. Children are particularly susceptible due to their compliant chest wall and relatively large head size. Anesthetic considerations include careful padding, frequent position checks, monitoring for pressure points, and awareness of potential airway compromise. The syndrome is most commonly seen during spinal, neurosurgical, or plastic surgery procedures.
